It's probably because of the rural Alberta's commonly accepted slam-dunk conservatism that nobody outside of Grande Prairie noticed the Bill Given train coming; after Andre Arthur, that GP councillor got the second best Independent result in the country, and at 20%, by far the best result for any Alberta non-Tory outside of Calgary/Edmonton. (Only one other non-Tory even hit 15%, barely.) And, presumably, who cares anyway--Warkentin still got almost three times Given's vote. (But it's odd that more commentators and wags were prone to mentioning the much more modest second-place Green showing in Wild Rose, than Peace River's Bill Given phenomenon--perhaps because anything that posits Greens vs Myron Thompson is worth a cheap chuckle.) |
