When Golden Mayor Jim Doyle knocked off Socred incumbent Dwain Crandell in 1991 Doyle was percieved by many as a rising star in the NDP. However after eight years on the backbenches as one of the most ineffective MLAs, being shuffled quietly out of the Ministry of Forests after only a year as a result of his own incompetance all the while serving in the most unpopular government in British Columbia history, Jim Doyle has little reason to be complacent. Union influence in Golden and Revelstoke has steadily decreased in recent years. Moreover, Premier Ujjal Dosanjh has little appeal in this part of the Province. The eastern interior has felt the brunt of NDP mismanagement and Doyle will not be forgiven for his past record of standing idely-by, defending his governments reckless policies while his own constituents where left unemployed when mills and mines closed because of the short-sighted policies of Doyle's government. Doyle will pay a hefty price for his record of inaction and neglect. Watch for Doyle to be one of the first NDP ministers to go down to defeat on election night. This riding should be a Liberal walk in the heart of this one-time NDP stronghold. |

Wendy McMahon will easily win over Doyle. The Liberals are very well organised in the riding, the NDP are not. |

This will be a Liberal gain - Combined Liberal/Reform vote last time was 54% - the voters won't repeat the split this time. |

Doyle and McMahon are roughly equal in the highway sign wars down the Columbia Valley, but in Invermere lawns are plastered with Liberal signs while not a single NDP one can be seen. The old lesson in grassroots politics is clear: it takes only a single person to put a hundred signs up along a road, but it takes the consent of hundreds of people to put signs up on lawns. McMahon wins in a walk. |
