With Armstrong's retirement a hotly contested battle to be the MP for this starkly beautiful corner of County Durham can be expected. It is, however, a battle for the Labour nomination. This is a very safe Labour seat (ex-mining territory for the most part, but since 1983 it has also included Consett - a former steel town that fell victum to the brutal Thatcherite reorganisation of the industry in the early 1980's) and had been in the hands of the Armstrong family since 1964 (daughter Hilary ?inherited ? it from father Ernest in 1987). Parts of this constituency (the bit that formed the bulk of the old Spennymoor seat) even stayed Labour in 1931. |
