Whitby is the capital of the Durham Region, which has some of the highest property taxes in the GTA. That might make someone think that ridings like this will therefore go for a tax-and-spend party. The reality, however, is that Durham is also a very right-wing place. Many of the new comers are upper middle class people who wanted to not only move to a suburb, but a burb that is far away from the lower middle class people who move to the burbs. This riding in particular has seen quite a bit of growth, it’s a PC lock. |

The seat loses Ajax and gains part of Oshawa--and bam! the one-time forest of NDP signs in that part of Oshawa dwindle to a trickle. Interesting thing about Flaherty/Elliott is how symbiotic they are; just because Elliott is female, provincial, non-governing, not a bigshot finance minister, and with less parliamentary experience doesn't make her 'lesser', or a carpetbagger by any means. Who knows; *she* just might wind up being John Tory's replacement as party leader. As for the Grits, memo to Ms. Hammer: you can't touch this... |

Oh what a boring campaign this is shaping up to be. All you see is Christine Elliott signs everywhere. But the Tories should not be complacent, as much as they my have a lock on the Flaherty Fifedom, the full-funding issue might just come back to haunt them. Now wouldn't that be exciting - a horse race. |

local mpp christine elliott is clearly the favourite here, as she managed to beat former liberal mp Judi Longfield in a by-election back in 06. this really showed she is a strong candidate and her recent experience as an mpp will help her this campaign. |

It looks like the husband-wife team with Flaherty holding this federally and Elliot provincially will continue. Even though the Flaherty family may be hated elsehwere in Ontario, they seem to be well liked here, never mind Ajax was removed and Oshawa added so this riding is even more favourable to the Conservatives. |

Like in 2003 and the 2006 by-election, Whitby-Oshawa will go Tory blue. MPP Christine Elliott has the election machinery of husband, MP, and federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty behind her. That's more than enough to ensure her re-election. |
