Cummins has a bit of a maverick streak; f'rinstance, he's the rare BC ReformAllianceConservative to have cast his lot w/Belinda Stronach in the CPC leadership race. Nevertheless, he's earned his stripes over a decade+ representing the Delta; and besides, this is classic 1991-style BC Liberal country. (Which means, the *federal* Liberals have a reasonable chance here if their usual favourable between-election polls in BC ever, for any reason, followed through on polling day. Didn't happen in '93, '97, '00, why should it happen now...) |

I think the Conservatives will take this seat again. Cummins is too popular a candidate to lose. His fisheries stand is not popular with the Natives, but this has never hurt him. Stephen Harper demoted him from the shadow cabinet and was not pleased by his position on the aquaculture fishery. |

The municipality of Delta proper has historically voted for the conservative candidate, irrespective of various redistributions. In this redistribution, Delta North, a somewhat less conservative area, is now part of another riding. The Richmond East portion of the new riding may have a stronger Liberal vote, but the relatively affluent area of Tsawwassen and middle-class Ladner in Delta South should provide enough of a majority to return John Cummins as a CPC member. |
