The Liberals came close to taking Argenteuil in 2000, and might have done so this time if their support had been high in Quebec as it was at the beginning of 2004. The COMPASS poll for this riding a few days ago shows Mario Laframboise of the BQ ahead of Yves Sabourin of the Liberals by 30 points - 59% to 29%, so this seat will be staying BQ.

Slam dunk for the Bloc, the Liberals aren't even on the radar screen. According to a COMPAS poll in today's National Post (June 11, 2004) of 12 key ridings, the Bloc's Mario Laframoise has a commanding 30% lead on Liberal Yves Sabourin. The Liberal's are toast.

A marginal riding that could go either way in a Liberal-leaning year (in fact the BQ barely carried it in 2000), but if the Bloc's post-scandal support firms up, it should stay BQ with a substantially increased margin. If the Liberals recover and start to move again in Quebec, expect winner and loser to be separated by less than a 1,000 votes.

For M. Page, look at my text and see that I was talking about the mayor of Lachute. He is a PQ Mayor and he went public for Yves Sabourin call the local radio and paper on that. Second if you talk of the Mayor of Mirabel he is a member a federal liberal no doubt.
Finally for the long analysis I think that there is a mistake St Colomban part of Mirabel was PQ and is now in Riviere du Nord.
Liberal will win a close race.

=========================
Voters in traditionally federalist regions, like Papineau and Argenteuil, are surely frustrated to see they’re being represented by a Bloc Québécois MP since 1993. Unfortunately I think they will have to endure Laframboise for another 4 years or 3 and a half…
The Bloc Québécois is geographically advantaged in Argenteuil-Mirabel (A-M). This federal riding covers major parts of three provincial ridings: Papineau, Argenteuil, and Mirabel. Papineau and Argenteuil are Liberal strongholds, while Mirabel is a PQ stronghold. What decreases Liberals’ chances in A-M is the fact this federal riding excludes the urban municipalities of Buckingham and Masson-Angers (located East of Gatineau and included in the Papineau provincial riding). If A-M had covered Buckingham and Masson-Angers, instead of Mirabel, Liberals would automatically start with 10,000 votes, and the riding would’ve been impossible to take for the Bloc.
The Bloc can presently get 10,000 to 15,000 votes in Mirabel. Added with the Bloc’s capacity to obtain 8,000 to 10,000 votes in the remaining parts of A-M, many of us can understand why Laframboise succeeds in keeping the riding.
We must also take into account that the Bloc snatched a victory in A-M in 2000, even if provincially the Liberals were leading over by 5 points. If the recent polls are correct, and the Bloc maintains its current support, Yves Sabourin, the Liberal candidate, faces a hard task …
If Sabourin would be in position to win:
-1- He needs to get more than 70% of the votes in the corridor that goes from Thurso to Lachute, which implies winning in every village. That would be hard to do. Norm MacMillan and David Whissel, the two Liberal MNA’s in this area, have won their riding with a score under 60%. Even some villages’ results had been close between the Liberals and the Péquistes.
-2- He should campaign hard in Mirabel, and get the results as well. It’s true that Lachute is the central city in Argenteuil. However Mirabel is the main population centre in A-M. In the last 2003 provincial election, the provincial Liberals finished third behind the Action démocratique. Hence Sabourin needs to get a lot more than 28% in that area.
-3- And provincially, the federal Liberals need to avoid the possibility that the next campaign in Quebec starts being a referendum on the Liberals. The transformation of the federal campaign into a referendum on the Liberals is more likely to happen in Quebec than anywhere else. The sponsorship scandal still hurts the Liberals and the unpopularity of Charest’s Liberal provincial government can only help the Bloc at this time. Many voters will punish the federal Liberals by proxy over Charest’s deeds…
These three conditions aren’t optional and separable. They must all be created if the Liberals hope to conquer Argenteuil-Mirabel. Otherwise the Liberals can only hope that the next mapping of the federal ridings in 2012 will exclude Mirabel and cover Masson-Angers and Buckingham.
=======================

Last fall if you asked us, we would have said that this riding was high on the list of Liberal pick ups. Not any more. A riding with a split personality, Federalist Argenteuil and seperatist Mirabel should offer a compelling race. However the BQ are polling way too high for any chance of that. Bloc keep unless drastic changes occur in the Grit's favor.

This riding is partly located in the very federalist Outaouais ,this is why the run is always so close here. The more eastwards you go here, the more the approval for separatism and PQ rise. Assuming than Mr. Laframboise does no major bundler, he should be safe with the fall of the liberals at a provincial level.
