| A solid Labour seat, held since 1970 by Barry Jones, who is retiring this time. This is one of the most 'anglicised' parts of Wales, only about 45 minutes' drive from Liverpool and produced a turnout of just 32% in the 1999 Assembly election. The economy is dominated by heavy industry (Toyota have a factory at Deeside and the wings for Airbus jets are built here). The loss of hundreds of jobs at the Shotton steelworks could hit Labour's majority, but expect no surprises here. |
