| The decision by the local Lib Dem party to drop Donald Gorrie here in Edinburgh West was no doubt a strategic one. They probably want to get in a new, younger person while they are reasonably far ahead of the Tories here - which is a shame since it means the loss of one of Westminster's most able MPs. While the Lib Dems do not have a strong record of hanging onto seats once incumbents retire, a 7,000 majority in 1997 and a reasonably comfortable hold here in the 1999 Scottish Elections should ensure that the Lib Dem tenure in Edinburgh West lasts through the next parliament. |

| Donald Gorrie was not "dropped". he announce his intention to stand down after being elected as an MSP. I think the Lib Dems will hold this seat. They have a strong local government base and won this seat in the Scottish elections. |
