| Although Major is not seeking re-election, this riding will remain in Tory's hands with its rich Tory history. However, the Tories will have a tough time finding someone that is as honourable and respectable as the Prime Minister to uphold the banner. |

| Mr. Major had a majority of something like 18,000 in 1997, in what was the worst Tory election result in well over a century. Some of that margin can be attributed to the Prime Minister's personal popularity and integrity, but Huntingdon is a safe constituency for any Tory. Conservative Hold. |

| It may be an interesting academic exercise to speculate what might have happened here in 1997 had it *not* been John Major's constituency; perhaps, like many of its quasi-(sub)urban outer-London-overspill cohorts, it could have been unexpectedly reduced to a technical C-Lab marginal. But it didn't happen, and however one might wish, keep in mind that it'd take a Portilloesque 16-percent swing for Labour to take Huntingdon... |
