Just attended the Gilmore School all Candidates meeting. Wayne Marklund who is running for the BC Conservative Party did very well for his first time out. He can't win, but he's going to take a lot of votes away from Richard Lee the incumbent BC Liberal MLA. Richard Lee did poorly. He was challenged three times on lies that he read directly from his BC Liberal answer sheets.
The beneficiary of Richard Lee's poor performance will, of course, be Janet Routledge the BC NDP candidate. It doesn't matter to her if the votes Richard Lee loses go to her or Wayne Marklund. What matters is that they aren't going to Richard Lee.

Janet Routledge will probably win Burnaby North for the BC NDP. It's going to be a tough fight for her because Richard Lee for the BC Liberals hasn't done anything to lose the support he had in 2009. I'd be surprised if Janet won by more than 400 votes.

The fact that Richard Lee has won this riding three times always surprises me. So I'm open to the possibility that he might surprise me again. However, I'm convinced that situation has only about a 10% probability of occurring amid a dismal political environment for the Liberals and an increasingly powerful municipal NDP organizational machine.
In future elections, as suggested below, this riding might behave quite differently. This time, though, I'd be really taken aback to see the incumbents retain this seat.

There has been a lot of gentrification into this area in recent years to the point that the centre-right has been able to build a base. Traditionally an almost-always NDP seat this is now a bellwether. Still, with polling like this (today giving the NDP a 20-point lead) there's enough ?classic Burnaby? left in this riding to easily hand this to the NDP.

Richard Lee has squeezed by in the past two elections but it doesn't look like it will happen this time as well. With the massive lead of the NDP in the Lower Mainland this is one of the close ridings in the past that will translate into a NDP victory.
The current scandal going on won't help with the diverse demographics of Burnaby North either.

Janet Routledge has been canvassing for over an year now. This constituency will go to the candidate, BCNDP/BCLiberal, that works the hardest to ask each voter for their vote.

Another Burnaby squeaker last time for the Liberals. It is not happening again this time. An NDP gain as they sweep all of Burnaby -New Westminster.
