A nondescript 905-Liberal rubber-stamp seat, but for one bizarre blip of 2004 election-eve trivia: this was the seat which Pierre Chenier of the Marxist-Leninist Party was reported to be winning according to the earliest returns. And believe it or not, the evidence is set in stone in Poll 73C according to Elections Canada's official returns--and from all appearances, it's a likely tabulation error where the otherwise dominant Guarnieri vote (here registered as *zero*) was placed in the Chenier column by accident. Oh well; the scale of Guarnieri's plurality (losing only two other polls) probably rendered retabulation a moot point in the end... |

Albina Guarnieri won back in 1988 when the Conservatives were strong in the 905 belt ridings. She won by 30 points last time around and so no matter how poorly the liberals do in Ontario, they will still hold this one, although possibly by a smaller margin. Even though there is a large Ethnic community, Stephen Harper's opposition to gay marriage likely won't swing too many ethnic voters. In fact many ethnic people on the West Coast who I talked to were offended by Harper's ads even if they happen to support the traditional definition of marriage. |
