With a massive 17,000 majority, it would be a bit of a shock if Labour didn't hold Sheffield Central. However it will be interesting to see what happens to the Lib Dems and the Tories. The Tories were in third place here even in 1992 and fell even further behind in 1997. Since then, things have not really picked up for them at local elections. The Lib Dems, meanwhile, have been pretty successful, winning control of Sheffield Ciy Council, and it will be interesting to see whether they manage to consolidate their good second-placing last time (their vote actually held up here pretty well in 1997 - fairly rare in an inner city seat where they didn't do that badly in 1992). |
