The Liberals actually won this one in 1983, defeating a low profile Labour incumbent with a ferocious 'community politics' campaign. However, Michael Meadowcroft lost in 1987 as Labour surged in northern cities hard-hit by Thatcherism. He later formed a traditional 'Liberal Party' in protest at the merger of the Liberals and the SDP in 1988. He got nowhere and this seat is now safe as houses for Foreign Office Minister John Battle. |
