With a massive 20,000 majority and a slightly less comfortable win in the 1999 by-election, Leeds Central is unlikely to be anything but a Labour hold. However, the by-election did produce one shock. Building on their local success and the general trend towards them in the Northern cities, the Lib Dems tripled their vote, albeit on a record low turnout. It will be interesting to see whether they can capitalise on this and make some kind of impact here in Leeds at this election ... however, the fact that the Lib Dems have so far failed to select a candidate here does not bode particularly well. |
