Llew Smith is an irreconcilable Labour left-winger whose hero Aneurin Bevan ,father of the National Health Service who like Smith was born and bred here and was the local MP. That did not stop him colluding with the Tories by campaigning for a NO vote in the devolution referendum in 1997. Smith became almost a hate figure for many Labour activists, who were delighted when Blaenau Gwent produced a big YES vote on referendum night. Nevertheless he will hold this seat which was also held by former Labour leader Michael Foot from 1962 to 1992. There is a genetic hatred of the Tories in the Welsh Valleys. |
