Exeter attracted a lot of media attention last time. Labour's Ben Bradshaw (who is openly gay) squared up against Adrian Rogers, head of an organisation called the Conservative Christian Fellowship. Rogers tried to use American religious right techniques which - hearteningly - blew up in his face. Bradshaw won on an above average swing and stacked up a 12000 majority in a seat that Labour had only ever won once before (1966-1970). Rogers isn't standing again - he proved too extreme even for William Hague's Tory Party. Bradshaw is well positioned to defend the seat, which was one of the very, very few places where Labour made gains in the disastrous May 2000 local elections. Exeter is in Devon and its tourist industry has felt the pinch from foot-and-mouth, but Bradshaw has kept a good profile during the crisis, even getting his colleagues from around the country to come and spend a day in Exeter to show support for local tourism! Another solid Labour victory predicted here. |
