A hell of a lot has gone wrong for Labour here since 1997. It all started when Dennis Canavan, who has represented the seat at Westminster since 1974, decided he wanted to stand for the Scottish Parliament. He was not allowed on the list of approved candidates and alleged 'control freakery' by the party establishment- he is on the left and a paid up member of the awkward squad. Canavan duly stood as an independent, outpolling the official Labour candidate by three to one and winning by the largest margin of any constituency MSP. Labour were understandably jittery when Canavan announced his resignation from Westminster last year, and won the ensuing byelection by just 703 votes over the SNP. Eric Joyce - one of very few Labour MPs to have a military background - should be all right on the night, but the voters in Falkirk West still seem to hold something of a grudge against the Labour Party for how badly Canavan was supposedly treated.
