Dumfries was the Conservative's longest held Scottish seat prior to 1997. If the Tories are to make gains anywhere in Scotland, this is likely it.

Unlike its equally ex-Tory neighbour Galloway&c, Dumfries has never been exceptionally SNP-compatible--in effect, it works like Cumbria's northern spillover (Scotland's Monmouth?). (If it weren't Scottish, it might have stayed Tory.) The especially dramatic C-Lab swing in '97 can be explained by Sir Hector Monro's retirement--but it's foot-and-mouth country today, so the swing may be even more interesting this time...
