Lawrence Cunliffe is retiring after more than twenty years in the Commons and there was a bitter fight for the Labour nomination, which was eventually won by an outsider - a London-based special adviser to Culture Secretary Chris Smith. Don't expect the selection wrangle to change anything though; this is the sort of place where the MP is chosen at the Labour selection meeting, not the polling stations.
