A very starkly divided seat - containing both Conservative countryside and the largely working class town of Winsford, which grew rapidly in the sixties to acommodate 'overspill' population from Liverpool and Manchester. Winsford is rock solid Labour, with almost a full slate of Labour councillors (I think there are two LibDems), but is usually outvoted by the Tory villages. Labour ran a huge campaign in the 1999 byelection which included a visit by the Prime Minister (very unusual in a British byelection), and had a strong local candidate in Margaret Hanson (the Tories had parachuted in a candidate from Sussex). Nevertheless the Tories won and in all probability will do so again. |
