England's smallest county and then some. Tory's couldn't lose it in 1997 and won't lose it in 2001. Fox vote is for Labour - but not many have made it to 18 in these parts!

Having lived in Melton for 20 years, I'm pretty certain it'll remain True Blue this time. But the trend towards Labour here is interesting, with the apparent previous split between LDs and Lab being turned round in 1997. The Lab candidate is a high profile Melton councillor, who might consolidate the anti-Tory vote (Melton's council is not Tory anymore and nor, I think, is Rutland's). Melton has pockets of poverty, including the poorest ward in Leicestershire outside the Leicester itelsf. Rutland also has areas of extreme poverty, which is cancelled in most of its wards by one or two rich landowners. But it is the nature of the constituency that even those worst affected by the two area's underlying economic problems (mainly unskilled jobs, dormitory villages) will vote Tory, if they vote at all.
