The Tories take this one back. Even with the redistribution Foot and Mouth will hurt Labour in the Midlands. Only the Labour rush of '97 allowed them to take this one last time around. |

I live in Broxtowe. The LibDems took 5 seats off Labour and one off the Tories in 1999 to become the opposition to Labour on the council. There are many LibDem and Labour posters. The Tory candidate is from Derby (a bit like having a Liverpool fan standing in Everton) and is prone to upset electors when she meets them. There are very, very few Tory posters. I predict a labour hold or even (with a fair wind) a surprise LibDem win. They took nearly 29% of the vote in 1999! |

The Tories weren't counting on the fine citizens of Broxtowe to give them the Boots in '97; but even at their most middle-class, such Northern Labour seats have had a tendency to stay fixed upon gain. If polls are going as they are, Labour has a safe election cushion; but then, the North is the first place to look for signs of a Blair backlash... |
