One of the most perverse results of the 1987 election was the shock Tory victory in Walthamstow - Labour clawed it back in 1992 though and there was a big increase in the Labour vote last time. Neil Gerrard will be safe but should always keep his eyes on the Tories. |

It seemed like the end of an era when in 1987 Labour lost this traditional East End fiefdom which had once been represented by Clement Attlee. In actual fact it was more of a protest vote against the local Labour council which whacked up local taxes just weeks before the general election, and the Labour Party in London, which had come - not without justification - to be seen as dominated by the loony left. Unlike Battersea (which Labour also lost that year) there hasn't been an influx of 'yuppies' and city types dripping with cash, and Tory MP Hugo Summerson was a one-hit wonder, losing his seat in 1992. Walthamstow is once again a Labour stronghold. |
