Hayes and Harlington is another London ex-marginal which swung massively to Labour in 1997. Right wing Tory Terry Dicks was replaced by left-wing Labour MP John McDonnell; the new Tory candidate was crushed by well over two to one in 1997. It seems to have regained its status as a safe Labour seat. Hayes and Harlington is a working class area of west London just north of (and including much of) Heathrow airport.
