Oona King should hold this East London seat with relative ease. However, it will be interesting to see what happens to second place. In 1992, the Lib Dems (probably on the basis of their rather peculiar local strength, running Tower Hamlets) did pretty well. But (probably also on the basis of a rather disastrous performance on Tower Hamlets council), the Lib Dems crashed and burned in the 1997 election. Will they, on the basis of reasonable local election results and a good showing in the GLA elections, recover some of their former strength this time round or will Bethnal Green join the ranks of Lib Dem almost-wons? Watch the Tories too who actually INCREASED their vote here in 1997 ... could they begin to pose a real threat to Oona King this time? |
