The sitting liberal will likely win this contest between the Liberals and the NDP

Stephnie Payne is one of those political phoenixes/Energizer Bunnies - every time you think she's been knocked down, she comes right back up swinging. Don't count her out here.

Sergio Marchi's the federal rep, but being the small-electorate final riding in alphabetical sequence seems to have always made Yorkview/York West a bit of a barrel-bottom affair provincially. (Along with slightly shopworn pre-Vaughan middle-class suburban Italiana, it includes the infamous Jane-Finch neighbourhood.) Mario Sergio's a former North York council hack who took over from the most buffoonish (and homophobic) member of the Rae caucus, George Mammoliti (who went on to take Sergio's council seat). Stephanie Payne's spent over a decade as a school trustee, sometimes traipsing into her own hot water over playing the race card. Boundary changes help the NDP over the Liberals, especially by including York University and the apartment towers to its south (the solidest NDP parts of the former Downsview riding). Still, it'll be a surprise if Payne can vanquish the clout of the Italian Liberal machine.
